Ted Failon Suspect In Wife's Shooting

Ted Failon’s wife shot in the head, in critical condition
The wife of broadcast journalist Ted Failon was shot in the head inside their residence in Quezon City Wednesday, according to police.

Supt. Franklin Moises Mabanag, chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU) of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), said Trinidad Arteche, 45, of 27 Gen. Aquino Street, Tiera Pura subdivision, suffered wounds from a bullet that entered her left temple and exited on the right side of her head.

While there are reports that she has been declared clinically dead, an official statement from ABS-CBN yesterday said that she was still fighting for her life.

Last night, Failon was brought by the authorities to the QCPD headquarters in Camp Karingal, Quezon City, for further investigation.

Four of Failon's maid were also invited by QCPD authorities for investigation.

Senior Supt. Elmo San Diego, QCPD officer-in-charge, said investigators are looking into the suicide angle and other possible motives.

Reports said that Failon, accompanied by sister-in-law Pamela Arteche, brought the victim to New Era Hospital on Commonwealth Avenue.

In his initial written statement read in his evening newscast TV Patrol World, the news anchor insisted he didn't kill his wife.

He added that he didn't finish his daily morning radio program “Tambalang Failon at Sanchez” after receiving a phone call from one of his maids stating the situation of his wife.

Failon admitted that he had a quarrel with his wife Tuesday night before the unfortunate incident happened at around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Her wife reportedly left a written note before the incident happened. He did not elaborate.

But in other television and radio reports, it said that Failon’s wife expressed regret over their fight.

In the late evening newscast "Bandila," Failon said he and his wife have some financial problems to settle.

Meanwhile, executives from ABS-CBN asked the media and the public to respect Failon's privacy following the alleged shooting incident. "We appeal to everyone to please respect the privacy of Ted Failon and his family," Bong Osorio, VP for the network's Corporate Communications department, told the Manila Bulletin Wednesday.

Osorio pleaded for understanding from the public. "Ted's wife is fighting for her life [right now]," he said.

Failon, who has been with ABS-CBN since the 1990s, is one of the main newscasters for ABS-CBN's early evening news program "TV Patrol World." He also co-hosts, with another broadcaster Korina Sanchez, the morning radio show "Tambalang Failon at Sanchez."

In 2001, Failon, whose real name is Mario Teodoro Etong, joined politics when he ran for and won as Congressman in the first district of Leyte.

Failon won over re-electionist Rep. Alfred Romualdez. During his term, he authored a total 75 bills, 54 local bills and 21 of national significance. He co-authored 159 local and national bills.

He served his constituents from 2001 to 2004 before rejoining ABS-CBN's News and Current Affairs team and resuming his career in broadcast journalism.

Known for his hard-hitting comments on the AM band, Failon has been recognized for his contributions in broadcast journalism, winning awards from the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas Golden Dove Awards, the Philippine Movie Press Club Star Awards and the Catholic Mass Media Awards.

In a related development, Manila Rep. Bienvenido Abante, chairman of the House Committee on Public Information, aired concern over the incident.

Abante, a Baptist bishop, said he expects Failon, being a broadcast journalist, to tell the truth about the incident. “Being a broadcaster, the only thing that must come out from him is the truth,” Abante said.

Failon represented the first district of Leyte which is now occupied by Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.

Romualdez refused to comment on the shooting of Trina Arteche-Etong, who, is an “ordinary housewife.”

Romualdez commented that Failon is a province-mate and a good friend. He also did not comment on why Failon resigned from local politics after serving only one term as representative.

Failon’s name has been mentioned by former President Joseph Estrada as being on the list of possible senatorial bets the opposition will field in 2010
